How to Prepare for Your Next Family Photo Session

As an Atlanta family photographer, I know how important it is to capture beautiful, timeless memories with your loved ones. A family photo shoot should be a fun, stress-free experience that results in stunning Atlanta family photos you’ll cherish forever. To help you prepare, I’ve put together a guide with key tips to ensure your session goes smoothly.

Plan Your Outfits Thoughtfully

Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your family photos turn out. Here are some essential tips:

  • Wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable – if you feel good, it will show in your photos.

  • Incorporate a pop of color – layering neutral tones with one or two bright accents creates a visually appealing look.

  • Avoid small, busy patterns – these can be distracting and may not photograph well.

  • Choose comfortable shoes – we may walk between locations, bring a pair of comfortable shoes to swap out for prettier shoes in between shots.

  • Consider your location – if we’re shooting in a natural park, earthy tones work well, while cityscapes allow for bolder, modern outfits.

Bring the Right Essentials

Preparation is key to making your family photo shoot seamless. Pack a small bag with these must-haves:

  • Water – staying hydrated is important, especially in the Georgia heat!

  • Snacks – to keep little ones (and adults) from getting hungry and cranky.

  • Pacifiers and comfort items – if you have young children, familiar items like a pacifier or a favorite toy can help keep them happy.

  • Lipstick for touch-ups – especially helpful for moms who want to refresh their look mid-session.

  • An open mind – I may ask you to do some fun, unexpected poses to bring out natural smiles and laughter.

Time It Right

Lighting plays a significant role in creating dreamy, glowing Atlanta family photos. While I will help you plan the best time for your session, I recommend scheduling your session during:

  • Golden Hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) – the soft, warm lighting is the most flattering and dreamy.

  • Morning Sessions for Young Kids – if your little ones are happiest earlier in the day, a morning session might be best.

  • Avoid Midday Sun – the harsh light can cause unflattering shadows and squinting.

Get the Kids (and Pets!) Ready

If children or pets are part of your shoot, a little preparation goes a long way:

  • Talk to your kids beforehand – explain that the session will be fun and encourage them to be themselves.

  • Bring treats for rewards – small incentives can help keep kids and pets engaged and cooperative.

  • For pets, bring treats and a leash – if Fido is joining, make sure they have everything they need to stay comfortable and happy.

Relax and Have Fun!

The best family photos happen when everyone is having a good time. Don’t stress about perfection—focus on enjoying the moment with your loved ones. As your Atlanta photographer, my goal is to capture authentic connections and genuine joy in every shot.
